Prievaly: Your Next Relaxing Getaway
Prievaly: Your Next Relaxing Getaway
Where is Prievaly?
Prievaly is located in western Slovakia, at the foothills of the Malé Karpaty. The village lies at an elevation of around 250–300 meters above sea level and has a population of roughly 1,000 people. It is about 30 km from Trnava and approximately 70 km from Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia.
Top 10 Things to Do in Prievaly
Hike to Záruby
Hiking to Záruby is probably the most common thing people do in Prievaly. The walk is peaceful, mostly just trees and quiet around you, so it is a nice break from everything. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with an amazing view.
Pass by the Private Zoo
On the way there, you pass a small private zoo behind a fence. It is not open to the public, but you can still see black goats and ostriches. When we were kids, we used to stand there watching them run around and even bet on which one was faster.
Visit the Catacombs
If you feel brave enough, you can visit the local catacombs. There is an old legend about a snake sitting on a hidden treasure somewhere inside. So enter at your own risk!
Relax in a Beer Spa
After a long hike, there is nothing better than relaxing in a beer spa. You can sit in warm baths, drink unlimited beer brewed right there, and just fully relax. If you still feel tired, you can even get a massage to recover after the hike.

Try Traditional Slovak Food
Once you are relaxed, you can go upstairs to the restaurant and eat something proper. Bryndzové halušky are small potato dumplings with sheep cheese and bacon, very filling and very Slovak. You can also go for a classic schnitzel with mashed potatoes, but I my personal favourite dish is sweet pirohy – soft dumplings filled with marmelade or Nutella.

Experience a Folklore Performance
If you come at the right time, you can see a folklore performance. On the first Saturday in May, there is a beer festival where locals and people from nearby villages dance in traditional costumes with live music. You can also experience similar performances during Christian holidays, when locals come together to celebrate their traditions.
Visit a Mass at the Church of Saint Michael
Speaking of Christianity, religion is a big part of life here, and this church is at the center of it. It is a baroque building from the 18th century, built on the site of an older one. If you go there on Sunday at 10:30, you can hear beautiful singing and just take a moment to slow down and relax your mind.
Go Sledding in Winter
In winter, the hills around the village turn into perfect sledding spots, and even older people join in. The snowy Christmas atmosphere makes it feel especially magical.
Cycle and Enjoy Summer Nature
In summer, everything becomes green and alive. You can go cycling through the forest, stop by a lake, swim, have a barbecue, or even try fishing. In the evening, you can enjoy beautiful sunsets like these, and at night, when it gets quiet, just lie down and look at the stars.
Take a Day Trip to Smolenice
If you want a small trip, you can go to Smolenice, about 20 minutes away. It is known for the beautiful Smolenice Castle and the Driny Cave – the only accessible cave in western Slovakia. The cave is known for its narrow passages and interesting rock formations. It is a short but unique experience.
